Scared By Squares: A New Liminal Space Horror Takes Being Chased By Squares To A New Level

In Scared By Squares, you don’t just play a game; you fulfil a sentence. Cast as a life sentenced prisoner, your final assignment is to infiltrate “The Cube”a failing digital panopticon engineered to contain a shape shifting entity known only as the Shaper. It is a high-concept setup that immediately justifies the game’s stark, geometric aesthetic, turning what could be simple level design into a narrative-driven prison of 90-degree angles.

One of the most striking things I noticed while making my way through the prison is how the environment itself refuses to stay still. The squares don’t just exist as walls; they move with a mechanical intent that immediately gets under your skin. There’s no “safe” corner here because the geometry is constantly shifting, creating this suffocating realization that there is absolutely no escape. It’s one thing to be chased by a monster, but it’s another thing entirely when the room you’re standing in is the thing hunting you.

Then there are the sounds. Even when you’re physically alone in a room, the audio design ensures you never actually feel alone. I picked up on these deep, eerie groans and digital whispers that seemed to pulse through the walls. It creates an atmosphere that is genuinely terrifying; it’s that specific kind of dread you only get when the silence is broken by something you can’t see. It makes every area feel like a trap, turning the minimalist design into a heavy, psychological weight that follows you every step of the way.

While the atmosphere is heavy, the gameplay itself is surprisingly tight. I found that the puzzles took a few minutes to really get used to there’s a specific logic to the Cube that you have to wrap your head around first. But once it clicks, you realize how well constructed everything actually is. It doesn’t feel like the game is throwing random obstacles at you; instead, it feels like you’re slowly learning to speak the language of this failing digital world. It’s a rewarding experience that proves even a world made of simple squares can have deep, complex layers.
