PlayStation fans are pushing back after Sony appears to have introduced new licensing restrictions on digital PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games. The reported change prevents users from accessing recently purchased titles unless they connect to the internet at least once every 30 days, raising fresh concerns about long-term game preservation.

Earlier this week, preservation-focused account Does It Play flagged what it described as a “potential major DRM issue,” claiming that “all new PSN purchases now have a 30-day validation countdown.” The warning specifically applies to games bought through the PlayStation Store, not titles claimed through subscription services.

Following further testing, the group reported that newly purchased PS4 games now include a visible 30-day license timer. The PS5 appears to be affected as well, though it only displays an error when attempting to launch a game. On PS4, the countdown can be seen directly, as shown in a video from Modded Warfare, where Don’t Starve Together displays both a “Valid Period (End)” and “Remaining Time.
